Lately: A Little Update on What’s Going on at HollyDays

Oh yes, let’s see, It seems as if I’ve been caught up in projects lately I’m a little behind on our blog, posting on Facebook,  Instagram… you get the picture, so I wanted to share some snapshots and quick updates with you!

HollyDays Home

First of all, we are building a house and we are at the critical time of decision making, so my mind is totally wrapped up in that. We started picking out house colors this week (yikes!) and I’m am SO nervous about this and so excited at the same time. Of course that means I’ll be getting a new HollyDays office and I can’t wait to see all that come together! I’m not going to bore you with the details, so if you don’t know already, you can follow along our homebuilding process HERE.

Second, I truly appreciate all the kind words and messages we have been receiving lately about our free printable monthly calendars! Thank you! To answer the question, yes, we will be doing the free printable calendars in 2014! As you know, we release them 2 at a time right now. We may change that up a bit or we may provide a yearly download for a small price if you want to go ahead and download the whole year… we’ve still got some planning to do, so we’d love to hear your feedback on the calendars. We are so glad you are enjoying them!

HollyDays Catalog Coming Soon!

Another thing… I have been working on a HollyDays catalog for Home Show/Trunk Shows and customers who like to shop from a catalog. I was doing home shows when HollyDays first started seven years ago and I’ve been wanting to bring it back for over 2 years, so with lots of brainstorming, we have it in the works! If you’d like to receive a catalog, go HERE and enter your info and we’ll mail you one when the time comes!

One last thing… No, we aren’t doing Christmas Village this year. I’ve made some tough, but great decisions based on my definition of success and what is best for my family this year and cutting out traveling and large workloads at one time was best for me at this stage in our life. I can’t tell you how much I will miss being there this year. We are planning on having a Trunk Show in Birmingham around the holidays, so if you are in the area, it’s one on the list of three locations so far. We’ll talk about that more in the near future!

Oh, and we’ll be introducing some new products, soon!…

Personalized iPhone cover

Ok, there you have it… a long, rambling post about a variety of things rolling around in my head right now. I sure feel better getting it all out there! Hope you have a great day!

Back to a better pace & cupcakes

Last week was one of those weeks- one of those busy, exhausting weeks! One that was just such a blur, I actually can’t even remember what happened from one day to the next – I was just operating in survival mode. The week prior, we had spent setting up and working our Spring show, Cottontails Village in Birmingham, Alabama.

{Our Booth}

{Our HollyDays Tree… my favorite part!}

{Party setup & coloring table for the kids}

{We’ll be putting our Easter clothing & stickers/tags on our website this week!}

Wow, I have to tell you, this time I was exhausted. I had some AMAZING wonderful help this year, too – My husband, Jen, Karan, my parents and my in-laws… A HUGE THANK YOU TO THEM! Doing the show for us, is basically setting up a 10×30′ STORE for 3 days and then to turn around and take it down come home and unload it again… wears me out just thinking about it!  We were so honored and excited to take home the 1st place booth award!

As we were tearing down the booth on Sunday evening, we got the message that my sweet friend, Lacey, was having her baby. She was just at the show the day before, so it’s a good thing the baby waited another day or else we could have had more excitement at the show than we could have handled! We packed up, went home to drop off the trailer, said goodbye to my parents who were watching our daughter and headed out the door with one of our hospital door signs and went to the hospital and waited for the sweet baby. She was born right after 10:30pm. We went home a little after that to get our little one in bed. The next day, we visited the hospital again so we could see the baby. As you can see, my Karidyn is in LOVE with this sweet new friend, Layla Westyn.

She is already a best buddy of her older sister, Ava Greer.

After all, they’ve been friends since they could sit in my office floor and play and Karidyn could pull AG’s hair!

Anyway, let me get back on track… show, return, unpack, catch-up and then start working on the new show orders… whew! Yes, I’m tired, but feeling good that orders from the show are actually going to start going out TOMORROW! Yay! We have a ton ready, just ready to be packaged up and shipped out.

Well, I’m off to get working on some new projects and glad to finally be back to a {more} normal pace! Keep up with this week on our Blog, Facebook or Twitter… we’ll be giving away a SIGNED COPY of Jan Moon’s Southern Living Big Book of Cupcakes! {YUMMY!}

Building Our Booth

This week, we are doing Christmas Village Arts Crafts & Gifts Show in Birmingham, Alabama.  We dropped off our show booth and products yesterday and spent three hours turning it from nothing to this…

Today, we will return to set up all the products!  Jen and I will be setting up and I’ll be updating you on the progress!  We hope to see you there!

Oh, now I can’t resist showing off my little princess all dressed up for Halloween.  She’s officially two-and-a-half now!  She’ll tell you that, too.  My, oh my, how they grow so quickly.

Hope you have a great day!

Do What You Love

Some exciting projects are going on around here!  I’ve been working on getting the Halloween goodies saved and on the website.  My plan is to have them all up on or before Friday.  Christmas products will be going up September 1st… only one week, yikes!  I’ve got some serious work to do before then!  Also,  Jenn and I will start working on the displays and plans starting the second week of September for our Christmas Show in Birmingham, Alabama (first week of November- you’ll be hearing much more about it).  We’ve also been working on re-branding HollyDays.  We think you will really like it!

Also, we are going to discontinue some products.  It is hard to give these up, but we believe it is in our best interest in order to focus more on PARTIES!  Our personalized clothing and bags will no longer be sold after this weekend.  I figured it would be nice to give you a little notice just in case you were holding out for something :)   We will sell our Christmas shirts and bottoms online and at our Christmas show as well as the remaining in-stock non-personalized tops and bottoms, but we will not be personalizing any shirts/bags after this weekend.  We hope you will understand, this has been a tough decision for me because I LOVE to see the designs I’ve created to be placed on other merchandise, but for now, we want to really put our focus on parties and events… and that is what makes me excited.

Thanks to these fabulous women, I have been giving much more heartfelt thought to the future of HollyDays and doing what I love.  Yes, it is a little scary, especially when I am thinking about discontinuing products I think are cute and very “sellable”, but not what I live for doing.

While at The Stationery Academy, I was asked by Whitney “What is your definition of success?”  You know, everyone’s definition is different and that is what makes success so great.  Maybe it is owning a large stationery company like Whitney or maybe it is being able to stay at home with your children.  When I started HollyDays in 2006, my goal was to be able to make a little extra money and have something to do in addition to being a stay-at-home-mommy.  You know, my vision really hasn’t changed in five years.  I had started thinking in a take-over-the-world mentality that I wanted to grow HollyDays into a huge operation with a lot of employees and you know where that would leave me- not fulfilling my vision, my purpose.  I guess I was getting caught up in someone else’s definition of success.  My vision truly is this- to be a business operated with the goal to help moms (myself included and my employees).  Jenn is a mom, I’m a mom and we love what we do- being creative and helping others plan and pull off a beautiful/cute/fun/creative event.

And so unless Oprah discovers our fabulousness (ha!), we’ll be a mommy business, happily serving our wonderful customers.  If you are a mom or soon-to-be-mom, sister, brother, dad, grandmother… one at a time we want to help make your parties and events special and a memory worth making extra special.

Here are a few more shots from the academy:  This must have been one of my “lightbulb” moments.

And my new amazingly creative and amazingly encouraging friends…

Hope you had a Happy Halloween!  Am I seriously talking about Halloween and Christmas in the same post?! Wow!  Here’s a picture of our little lady dressed up!

Working on our Show Booth

We’ve been busy working this weekend on our new show booth and boy, we are exhausted!  Yesterday, we started painting it.  My in-laws were in town, so my father-in-law helped us spray the booth.

It was a beautiful, hot day yesterday and we had just finished painting and doing the whitewash technique to these walls…

And it started to sprinkle… we started to worry… and it started to sprinkle harder… we started to hurry pulling pieces indoors… then it started to pour… we started running around like crazy folks trying to get everything out of the rain… we got the last piece out of the rain and… it stopped.

I promise it went from beautiful to a quick shower and sunny again within five minutes.  Then the sky looked beautiful.

Then we started painting some more…

Once these walls were painted a black cat showed up… seriously, I think you don’t believe me, but I’m serious about this!  We kept trying to get it to go home and it kept sneaking up on us.  We turned our backs for a matter of seconds and when we looked back at the boards there were tiny paw prints across two of them.  Please Note: no cat was harmed in this project, but I seriously think that he was pushing his luck with my husband and one of his lives.  I didn’t take pictures of the paw prints…  I wasn’t going to push my luck either.  I had already laughed at him after the paint gun sprayed back at his face two times.

Today, we repainted the blue and the brown.  Of course, after we painted the brown, the wind blew and got leaves and dirt on the paint.  So after letting it dry, sanding it and repainting, we were done.  Yes, the end is in sight.

I’m really excited about our booth.  We have put a lot of work into in in hopes it will give us much better display space.  I can’t wait to see the finished product.

Hope you have a great weekend.

The Good, the Bad and the Gross

Just a warning, this isn’t going to be pretty.  What a week it’s been.  If you’ve wondered where we’ve been for the past 10 days, we’ve been busy getting the rest of our Cottontail’s Village orders out and prepping for our show we had this past weekend.  We finished up, well 99.9% finished, the orders we received at Cottontails on or before last Wednesday.  That was record timing:  Our show finished on March 7, and ten days later, all the orders were out.  It was even our best spring show ever.  We were happy.

On top of all the orders, we had to prepare for our Bunnies and Blossoms show in Anniston, Alabama.  It took a lot of late nights/early mornings, but it got done!  I don’t think I went to bed before 1:00 a.m. for a week.  We almost sold out of all our shirts we had at Cottontails, so we were expecting big things from our upcoming show.  We were prepared.

We left at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, set up all day and were ready for a preview party for the Junior League that evening at 6:00 p.m.  By 6:00, we were exhausted.  We have never done a show where we had to set up and then sell stuff the same day!  Here’s our booth.  We didn’t get it 100% finished, but it looked ok.  (Notice: the pom tissue balls were missing- not enough time to do them– they were piled up in the corner behind the curtains) But…  We were satisfied.

The show started at 6:00 p.m. and lasted until 8:00.  Two sales… That’s ok, because we we knew more were coming the next couple of days when the show was open to the public.  Friday turned out to be not so good with sales, but we were ok with that too, because we knew people were working and the sales would come on Saturday.  We were ok.

Saturday came and after being open several hours with no sales, a lady came into our booth and asked for a garbage can.  Hope you are ready for what’s to come because we certainly were not… before we could pull out the can behind the checkout counter, the little girl threw up in our booth on the grass… really.  It was definitely a first for us.  We rushed to get paper towels, baby wipes, anything that she could use to clean up her child and the floor.  Well, the girl’s face was cleaned, but they took off before we even knew it and there we were, standing dumbfounded.  (I was hoping she would have cleaned or attempted to clean up the mess, but she did not. She came back to purchase something, but I think it was because she felt obligated to, so I told her she didn’t need to.  Hope I did the right thing.)  I was a wreck.

Things appeared to get better.  I had my first sale about 15-20 minutes later.  I was going to get my daughter’s picture taken with a real bunny for Easter… standing in line the little girl next to me had an accident on the floor… really.  I was amazed.

I do have to say the girls in the Junior League were awesome!  They were so super sweet to all of us and they were very organized.  We do truly appreciate them letting us participate in the show.  We are thankful.

It was truly a crazy weekend.  We are so glad to be home.  Working on orders.  Just hoping we covered our expenses for the trip.  Everyone we talked to said they were in the same boat as us sale-wise.  I guess you win some and you lose some.  That’s business.

We have some exciting things coming this week!  Plus… some cute bunny shirts on sale since we have plenty left over! :)

Have a great day!
