Gobble! Gobble!

November is my favorite month of the year. It’s finally acceptable to listen to Christmas music, it brings Thanksgiving (my favorite holiday), the start of the Christmas season and all things pumpkin. Today I made pumpkin bread for the teachers at our church’s preschool. I have the absolute best recipe for pumpkin bread. I have a friend who doesn’t even like pumpkin and likes this bread!

My best friend from childhood’s mom has entrusted me with her family recipe. It wasn’t until I moved out of state, and with some begging, that she finally shared her secret. I recently found out that her own daughter has not even been given the recipe! (she recently moved out of state and so she is hoping to soon make it into the inner circle) I am telling you all this only to say, I have been sworn to secrecy. However, I have the next best thing! The best recipe for banana bread. I don’t like banana’s and I like this bread. (Really!)

Banana Bread

Ingredients:

1 cup of butter softened, 2 cups of sugar, 7 large ripe bananas mashed, 1 3/4 tsp. vanilla extract, 4 eggs slightly beaten, 3 cups flour, 1/2 tsp. salt and 2 tsp. baking soda

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream the butter and sugar in a large mixing bowl with beater attachment. Blend in the mashed bananas, vanilla and eggs. Sift together flour, salt and baking soda. Add dry ingredients one cup at a time to banana mixture until well blended. Split into 2 greased 9×5 inch loaf pans. Bake for 45-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool bread in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack and cool completely.

This bread is extremely moist and will be gobbled up quickly!

Happy Thanksgiving!

P.S. The little loaf pans are from Micheals craft store. They have a variety of fall and winter pans for $1 each, can’t beat that!

DIY Thanksgiving Tablescape

Fall Tablescape

Thanksgiving is just a few days away and if you are like me, you have grocery shopping, meal planning, house cleaning on the mind (in addition to all the other things)! I made my trip to the (crazy) grocery store today and picked up all the necessities, well except for the one thing I forgot, so I’ll be going back. Doesn’t it always work like that?! Anyway, last week was a whirlwind for me and now I’ve got a day to prep before my parents get into town, so I’m busy today getting the house clean and the table decorated. I wanted to share with you a fall table I did for Southern Holiday Life Magazine that I’ll be doing for my own family Thanksgiving meal.

I hand stamped small canvas bags with names of guests with a special treat inside (these would also be great to hold “thankful cards” – little cards for each guest to list things they are thankful for and then during dinner it provides a special conversation.)

Each bag had a little rosette attached. (I love rosettes, so if I could put these on everything I own, I probably would.)

The candles were placed in an acorn-filled mason jar.
(This is a great project for little ones to help with)

Wishing you a joyful Thanksgiving!

Addressing the Envelope Situation

I recently signed up for a Calligraphy class at Samford University in Birmingham with great aspirations that someday my envelopes might look something like this . . .

{source}

Let’s just say it will be awhile before that happens! I truly enjoyed the 2 hours of near silence each week in class spent working on perfecting my calligraphy, but it takes practice. With two little ones, finding the time to practice is challenging! Not to mention the risk I would be taking having an open bottle of black ink sitting around amidst trains, cars and footballs!

Meantime, here are some trends in addressing envelopes if you are lacking in time like myself, but desire a custom look.

1.You could use a collection of stamps that add up to the current postage rate. On a  wedding invitation envelope, for example, the stamps could represent different things about you as a couple such as hobbies, hometowns, etc. {source}

2.Create custom postage for a variety of occasions, you can choose from a large selection of pre-made designs or use one of your own pictures. {source}

3.Sometimes something as simple as placing the return address in an unexpected place will do the trick. {source}

4.Use a stamp, in this case one in the shape of a hanging tag, as a frame for writing the address. {source}

5.Wrap around stickers add something special to the front and the back of an envelope. A great way to save time because the return address can be pre-printed. {source}

6.Self-inking address stamps are an easy way to personalize an envelope. You can choose from a variety of new designs and fonts. {source}
